LUKEY K DON'T LIKE SKA NO MORE - TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2003

Nostalgia seems to be the only drug I take. It is so hard to make decisions while under the influence of it but i did my best.  Listening to a lot of this music put me in a state i would describe as melancholic bliss. I had a lot of fun whittling down what i think are my top ten albums of 2003. The year I would pinpoint as the my last year of naivety. I am really happy to do this with you guys and I am praying this helps my creativity. It is a weird thing writing from a good place. I seem to journal only in institutions and when I am being held in despair's grip. Without further ado, my picks.

10. Alkaline Trio - Good Mourning
The band that turned me on to our lord and savior Satan. The album is catchy as hell while just steering clear from being full MTV radio pop punk. Maybe the song We've Had Enough fails that as it was on an episode of the O.C. (When Seth's crazy aunt throws a house party)
Songs to listen to - This Could Be Love, All On Black

9. The Distillers - Coral Fang
I could never get into The Distillers for the fact that I always thought Brody Dahl was trying way too hard.  While that still may be the case, she is way more punk than 99 percent of men. So being older/wiser and less afraid of women I can tell you this album rips. Very infectious and very similar to Courtney Love's good shit.
Songs to listen to - Hall of Mirrors, Dismantle Me

8. The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic
Such a shame we only got one true album from these guys. So fucking bratty but so fucking cool. This album has such a timeless feel. I wish I was cool and got into them earlier but this album beat out a lot of amazing music I have been listening to for years. Too bad they didn't call themselves The Exploding Vans....
Songs to listen to - Still Crazy, Sleeping Aids and Razorblades

7. The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Loved this album then, love it even more now. I think i was so caught up in thinking they were cool for drug use when I was younger that i missed a lot of why they are really great. The concept for this album is awesome too. The best band that came out of the ashes of At the Drive In, and I love Sparta.
Songs to listen to - Roulette Dares (The Haunt of), Drunkenship of Lanterns

6. Moneen - Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now
Such an under appreciated band in any other group of friends. This album is so close to being perfect but I find it drags a bit in the middle. maybe in a couple years they write that perfect album. Only time will tell...
Songs to listen to - Start Angry, End Mad.,  Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now

5. Brand New - Deja Entendu
This album proves Jesse Lacey is a creep. He confesses it throughout the 35 - 40 minutes of runtime. I get why people were bummed but it was right in front of us all along.  It is too bad he acted on those dark desires that I'm sure crosses many minds but most are big enough to squash. That being said, what a great album. It still holds up and is a huge step up from Your Favourite Weapon.
Songs to listen to - Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis, The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot

4. Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth : 3
Imagine putting this album on while having sex? Haha really try. That visual really makes me laugh. The anti-dick or anti-poon of all albums. The story behind the music was so interesting to me back then. I am a sucker for lore and early Coheed was a great deep dive. It got way too convoluted as they went on. Anytime I put this on I go front to back and love every minute of it.
Songs to listen to -  The Crowing, Three Evils (Embodied in Love and Shadow)

3. The Bled - Pass the Flask
A huge reason I still love this album so much is it was my first step into "Screamo." (I believe the kids are calling it Skramz now which is so fucking weak.) This is a debut album if you can believe it. I know Hot Damn! came out the same year, and is the more revered of the two but I knew i was only putting one of them on here.  So pass the flask and close your eyes....
Songs to listen to - We Are the Industry, I Never Met Another Gemini

2. Modern Life is War - My Love, My Way
MLIW is like Jesse Lacey, they practiced what they preached. I love how positive this album can be while yet still taking a very anti establishment and working class stance. I invite you to do some reading up about how anti-police their old drummer was. I'm sure there are plenty of news stories about how far his hatred took him.  This is such an influential band and this album isn't even my favourite of theirs yet it is second on my list. Love them
Songs to listen to - Late Bloomers, Breaking the Cycle

1. None More Black - File Under Black
So much better than the shitty "punk" i was listening to in 2003. Jason Sevechuck sounds like he eats glass before he sings. His voice is jarring at first but if you stick with it then you have such a catalogue of his music ahead of you. This isnt even his best. I find acquired tastes stick around the longest because you have to work for them.
Songs to listen to - The Ratio of People to Cake, Ice Cream With the Enemy

Honorable mention to From the Depths of Dreams (EP) by Senses Fail and the song Konstantine by Something Corporate.

As you can see, what a Year!!!!!
